By-products growth

Today I want to talk about by-products.

In Novu, we have many strategies to grow our product.

One of our biggest is engineering as marketing and by-products.

We created some products that do not strictly go with our core product. Let me review some of them here, which might give you some ideas.

  1. HackSquad.dev - during Hacktoberfest (October), we created an event or, more likely, a movement of contributing code as a team. The event had minimal marketing - it grew by encouraging members to invite their friends and participate. We ended up having 5000 members within a month. It got Novu trending on GitHub a few times and also helped with small things like getting likes on DEV.to or promoting our tweets on Twitter. In general, it created a massive buzz around Novu. This year we aim for around 15k members, and it will keep growing every year.

  2. Notification.directory - We used ChatGPT to create a vast library of notifications users can use for their in-app notifications. We created an excellent article about how we built it here: https://dev.to/novu/building-the-largest-notifications-library-in-the-world-using-chatgpt-react-and-nodejs-2of7. It got us trending over GitHub (again) and still there as a valuable resource.

  3. Novu Community Heroes - We have built a big page showing all our contributors and their achievements (badges) that is updated every few hours over our GitHub repository. During Hacktoberfest, this project exploded when many members tweeted a screenshot of the achievements over Twitter.

We have a few more ideas for the next by-products; I can't wait to do them and share them with you.

One of GitHub20k's new by-product is https://libraries.github20k.com

Here is how it goes:

  1. I let people feature themselves on the website, hopefully, to get the attention of many visitors and influencers to their product.

  2. I register the people that added the library to our newsletter so I can keep expanding GitHub20k and help more people in their open-source adventures.

Let me know what you think!
